Matthew Vaughn Is Going to Subject Us to Kick-Ass All Over Again

Can’t he revisit the Stardust universe instead? Director Matthew Vaughn—whose new film Argylle is out soon—was at New York Comic Con this past weekend to talk about his body of work, including the Kingsman films and Kick-Ass, neither of which he’s ready to put behind him. No, a third Kingsman film is in the works—and so is a reboot of Kick-Ass, a film Vaughn believes “changed people’s perception of what a superhero film is.”

Did it, though? What Kick-Ass did do, certainly, is transform the careers of leads Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloe Grace Moretz, who both returned for Kick-Ass 2 (which was not directed by Vaughn). But this reboot won’t feature either of their characters. Vaughn said, “None of the other characters from the other Kick-Ass are in it, though we’d like to have them back after the reboot. I can’t really talk about it, but it’s fun!”

As Entertainment Weekly pointed out, there’s a template for a new Kick-Ass already, as original comics creators Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. returned to Kick-Ass in 2018 with a new central character: Patience Lee, a Black military vet who is a grown-up with children. It’s not clear whether Vaughn’s new Kick-Ass would be about Patience, or about another character entirely. But back in 2018, when he told Empire that a reboot was on the way, he said, “Look what Mark Millar is doing with the comic for clues.”
